Responsible Gambling
Gambling can be an enjoyable pastime for most people who engage with it on their own terms — but it carries real risks, and those risks can escalate quickly. This page sets out the practical tools, support services and personal checks available to players in Great Britain, whatever kind of site they are using. If you or someone you know is experiencing harm, the resources below are free, confidential and available right now.
Recognising the Warning Signs
Problem gambling rarely announces itself. It tends to develop gradually, making it harder to spot from the inside. The following signs are worth taking seriously, in yourself or in someone close to you.
- Spending more time or money gambling than you intended
- Chasing losses — continuing to play in order to win back what you've lost
- Gambling with money set aside for bills, food or rent
- Feeling restless or irritable when you try to cut down
- Lying to family or friends about how much you gamble or spend
- Borrowing money, selling possessions or taking out credit to fund gambling
- Neglecting work, relationships or responsibilities because of gambling
- Gambling as a way to cope with stress, anxiety or low mood
Experiencing one or more of these does not mean you have a serious problem — but they are signals worth acting on before the situation becomes harder to manage.

Self-Exclusion: How It Works and Your Options
Self-exclusion is a formal tool that prevents you from accessing gambling accounts for a set period. It is not the same as simply closing an account — it places an obligation on the operator to enforce the restriction and block you from reopening.
GAMSTOP
GAMSTOP is the UK's national self-exclusion scheme. Registering with GAMSTOP links your personal details — name, date of birth, email address and postal address — to a central database. Every operator licensed by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is required to check new registrations against this database and refuse access to anyone on the list.
Exclusions run for a minimum of six months, and can be set for one year or five years. Once you register, the exclusion cannot be reversed early. After the minimum period expires, you must actively request removal — it does not lapse automatically.
You can register at www.gamstop.co.uk free of charge. The process takes around five minutes.
Self-Excluding from Sites Not Covered by GAMSTOP
Some online casinos operate outside the GAMSTOP scheme — they are licensed in other jurisdictions and are not connected to the UKGC database. If you are registered with GAMSTOP and choose to access these sites, your GAMSTOP exclusion will not apply there. Each site of this kind has its own responsible gambling tools, and you will need to use them separately.
The sites listed on Sites Not On Gamstop each provide their own self-exclusion options within their account settings. To exclude yourself from an individual site:
- Log in to your account and go to the responsible gambling or player safety section
- Select self-exclusion and choose your preferred duration
- Confirm the request — you should receive a written confirmation by email
- Contact the site's support team directly if you cannot locate the option in settings
If you want to exclude yourself from multiple sites at once, contact each operator individually. Keep a record of every exclusion you request and the confirmation you receive.
Practical Tools for Staying in Control
Self-exclusion is a last resort for many players. Responsible gambling tools work best when they are set up before a problem develops — as a guardrail rather than a rescue. Most reputable casino sites offer the following.
Deposit Limits
Set a daily, weekly or monthly cap on how much you can add to your account. Once the limit is reached, no further deposits are accepted until the period resets. Requests to increase a limit are subject to a cooling-off period (typically 24 hours or more) at well-run sites, so an impulsive decision cannot immediately take effect.
Loss Limits
A cap on the total amount you can lose in a given period. Once the limit is hit, you cannot place further bets until it resets. Unlike a deposit limit, this accounts for winnings you may have reinvested.
Session Time Limits and Reality Checks
Set a maximum session length, after which you are automatically logged out. Reality checks are pop-up notifications during play that show how long you have been gambling and how much you have won or lost in the session. They are easy to dismiss but act as a regular prompt to pause and reflect.
Cool-Off Periods
A temporary break of 24 hours, a week or a month, during which your account is suspended. Unlike a full self-exclusion, a cool-off period ends automatically and your account is then accessible again. It is a useful option if you feel you need a short break rather than a long-term restriction.
Account Closure
Closing an account entirely is different from self-exclusion. Closure removes your access but does not formally add you to any exclusion list. Most sites will allow you to reopen a closed account after a waiting period, so this option offers less protection than formal self-exclusion if long-term access is a concern.
Blocking Software
If you want to restrict access to gambling websites at the device or browser level — independently of any individual casino — blocking software can help. These tools work across all sites, including ones that do not participate in GAMSTOP.
- Gamban — blocks gambling sites across all devices on your network or individual devices. Subscriptions are available monthly or annually. A free period is available to people registered with GamCare.
- BetBlocker — free browser extension that blocks access to gambling sites. Covers a large list of domains and can be set for periods from 24 hours to several years.
- Net Nanny / parental controls — most internet service providers in the UK offer free parental control settings that can be used to block gambling categories for any device on your home network.
Financial Limits and Practical Money Checks
Beyond the tools an operator provides, a few straightforward habits make a significant difference to staying in control of gambling spend.
- Set a budget before you play — decide in advance the maximum you are willing to spend, treating it as the cost of entertainment rather than an investment.
- Never gamble with money you cannot afford to lose — this means money needed for rent, bills, food, debt repayments or savings should be off the table.
- Keep gambling funds separate — use a dedicated prepaid card or e-wallet with a fixed balance to make spending visible and finite.
- Check your statements regularly — reviewing what you have actually spent, rather than estimating it, often produces a more accurate and sobering picture.
- Avoid gambling when drinking alcohol — impaired judgement leads to higher stakes, longer sessions and more impulsive decisions.
Who Can Legally Gamble in Great Britain
You must be 18 or older to gamble at any online casino available to players in Great Britain. This applies regardless of whether the operator holds a UKGC licence or is regulated elsewhere. Operators are required to verify your age, and most will ask for proof of identity — such as a passport, driving licence or utility bill — before allowing withdrawals or, in some cases, before allowing play at all.
Players under 18 are not permitted to create accounts or place bets. Operators are required to have age verification processes in place, and sites that fail to enforce this face significant regulatory consequences in jurisdictions where they are licensed.
If you are concerned that someone under 18 in your household may be accessing gambling sites, the parental control and blocking tools listed above can be applied at the network level to restrict access across all devices.
A Note on Sites Outside UKGC Regulation
The casinos reviewed on our main casino listings page operate under licences issued outside Great Britain — they are not regulated by the UK Gambling Commission. This means the GAMSTOP national self-exclusion scheme does not apply to them, and the consumer protections that come with UKGC licensing — such as mandatory safer gambling tools, dispute resolution through the UKGC and the right to escalate complaints to an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) service recognised by the UKGC — may differ.
Players using these sites should:
- Check the operator's own responsible gambling tools and use them proactively
- Understand that complaints must be raised with the operator directly or through the regulator in the country of licence
- Be aware that GAMSTOP registration does not block access to these sites
- Consider using Gamban or BetBlocker at the device level if they want a comprehensive restriction
None of this changes the support available to you. GamCare, Gamblers Anonymous and BeGambleAware are open to anyone experiencing gambling harm, regardless of which sites they have been using.
